One Small Step is a Christian ministry that collects new and good, used socks to distribute to people in need. |

The idea for One Small Step began when some women were taking clothing and blankets to the migrant farm workers who live in the Arizona orange groves during the winter. A little boy about two years old stood waiting in line, clinging to his mother’s skirt. Although it was January, he was barefoot and shivering. He lifted one foot, then the other, trying to avoid the cold ground. One of the women found a pair of men’s socks and slipped them over his little feet. His sweet, shy smile proved that even “one small step” can fill a huge need. In the summer of 2001, One Small Step was launched to provide good, clean socks to the poor and homeless. Since then, many thousands of pairs of donated socks have been given to people in need, through shelters, clothing banks, community action agencies, schools, churches, orphanages, and nursing homes.
You think no one wants used socks? Think again! Clothing banks usually get plenty of jeans, shirts, sweaters and accessories, but they never get enough good socks or underwear. Often, people come to these agencies specifically looking for socks or underwear, and if it’s not there, they leave empty-handed. Every day, school nurses see children who come to school without socks or underwear. How sad! These conditions are not unique to any particular area... the need is universal.
